americanagent: (Raye is watching)

[Raye tugs the knot of his tie loose as he opens the door, cradling his cell phone on his shoulder and waiting for his associate on the other end to stop talking - more news about Kira, of course, and some less interesting theories about how this would affect their livelihood, the system they all relied on so much. It was practically all anyone ever talked about anymore, and he'd been getting the sneaking suspicion that some of his colleagues were sympathetic to Kira's mission.]

[Not that any of them would ever come out and say so.]

[Eventually he's able to extract himself from the conversation with a polite excuse, and he drops his phone along with his briefcase onto the kitchen counter. Pulling his tie completely off he heads through to the bedroom, noting that the tv is, thankfully, off, and the living room empty. As long as Naomi wasn't getting any silly ideas from watching the news reports, Raye's sure he has nothing to worry about.]

[She has to be around here somewhere, however. As he approaches the bedroom he notices the door slightly ajar, and quiet rustling coming from within. It's almost as if he knows what he'll see before even pushing open the door: Naomi going through the drawers, searching for... something. He can't quite see what from this angle, so he stops in the doorway and watches her for a second.]

Naomi? Honey, what are you doing?

[Winter in LA isn't terribly cold, but even so Naomi finds that it puts her in the right, wintry frame of mind to sit down in front of the television with a hot cup of tea, and perhaps a blanket. It's the middle of the afternoon, so it's a little earlier than she would normally do it, but even so she feels like indulging herself, and so she sets up an armchair in front of the living room television, drops a few spoons of sugar into her cup, and flips on the television.]

[She's hoping to catch a decent movie, or maybe a procedural drama. She's always liked Law & Order, for example, and she has to admit she's developing a soft spot for various CSIs, despite the glitz, and definitely for Criminal Minds... although the latter tends to make her twitch from the inaccuracies. All of them make her miss her work, but it's a good sort of missing, really. A dull, and not unpleasant, ache.]

[So she's hoping to catch one, but instead when the television picture flickers into view, she finds herself staring at a special report, and a reporter's wide eyed stare as she describes the scene behind her: chaos, a prison in flames, dozens if not hundreds of inmates set free. Naomi drops her gaze to the captioning, and her chest squeezes.]

No.

[She glances back, over her shoulder, and calls out]

Raye!

[It's been years since Naomi last saw this particular penitentiary. Or any penitentiary for that matter. Prisons had become a thing of her past when she had retired from the FBI. Still, there is something familiar in the air that never quite leaves her system - the old way of seeing things, and the old way of thinking. She feels more at home now, walking toward the barbed wire fencing, than she has in years of shopping along the LA streets, carrying bags of groceries, and winter clothes, or summer clothes.]

[She's still thinking as she walks - one step, and she's thinking of London, two and she's thinking of the areas surrounding it - especially Essex. Three, and she's thinking of poisons, delivery systems...]

[And she's counting her steps as she walks, waiting for Raye to ask her again if she's sure she wants to do this, and remind her that she's no longer an agent, and that England is outside their reach anyway. But there's a thought in her head, lodged hard, and she can't shake it lose. So she holds her packet of photographs under her arm and she walks on.]
